Before coming to New Zealand I completed post graduate degrees in Science, Library & Information Services, and Health & Hospital Management in India. I managed a private hospital for over 10 years there. In New Zealand, I furthered my education by gaining the Fellowship of the Australasian College of Health Service Managers in 2010 and continue online learning through Coursera. My expertise lies in having a vision and getting everybody on board, set clear expectations and work efficiently towards a common goal. Catherine Cooney

Cathy is the Director of Kowhai Health Associates Limited, a health consultancy company established 2012. She has been involved with NZIHM since 1998 and was a founding member of the Lakes Branch. Cathy completed her ACHSM Fellowship in 2010. Cathy was the Chief Executive of Lakes DHB from 2001 to 2012 and the Director of Nursing and Midwifery from 1994-2000. She has a background in health sector leadership, executive management, public health nursing and community development. Cathy is currently the Chair of the Waiariki Bay of Plenty Polytechnic; Chair of the West Coast Hospital Redevelopment Partnership Group; Independent Facilitator, on behalf of Health Workforce NZ and Careerforce, for the Kaiāwhina (non-regulated) Workforce Action Plan development; a member of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal; Chair of the Midlands Health Network Alliance Leadership Team; Co-Chair for Healthy Families Rotorua; an Institute of Directors facilitator for the MSD governance capability programme and for the MSD Investing in Services for Outcomes programme; and a Lead Auditor for the health sector (DHBs). Karen Orsborn

General Manager and Deputy Chief Executive of the New Zealand Health Quality and Safety Commission

The Commission was established in 2010 to lead national improvement in patient safety and quality across the health and disability sector. Previously I worked for the Ministry of health as Manager, Electives Services then Group Manager, Funding. I am a registered nurse and have a Master's in Business Studies. In my current role I have responsibility for a range of programmes to improve patient safety and the quality of health services and throughout my varied career a consistent theme is a focus on leading large scale change and improvement initiatives. I am passionate about the professional development of all people that work in the health sector and would like to see strong membership of NZIHM with opportunities for learning and networking at multiple levels. Jagpal Benipal



PhD, MBS (distinction),BHSc., RCompN, FCHSE Senior Programme Manager Primary Care, Auckland & Waitemata DHBs, and Senior Honorary Lecturer, The University of Auckland



Jagpal is currently employed as a Senior Programme Manager Primary Care at Auckland & Waitemata DHBs. He has worked in the health sector since 1988 in a variety of clinical nursing, leadership and management within the DHB environment.He has lead quality improvement, workforce and service development initiatives, and has made substantial contributions through innovations in hospital, primary and community care services.Jagpal’s background in quality improvement and workforce development, both in clinical and leadership excellence, is supported by his academic credentials in health sciences, business studies, and PhD research related to acute admissions. Jagpal has also made a substantial contribution to development of a Bachelor of Nursing, and Postgraduate leadership & quality improvement courses at The University of Auckland. Jagpal has presented numerous papers related to quality improvement, leadership and health service management, at national and international conferences and has contributed to a book entitled ‘Making Quality Improvement Work’.(Local branch – Auckland)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mala Grant

Project Manager for Te Arawa Whanau Ora

In her current role Mala works to develop the infrastructure and coordinate the systems of Whanau Ora for eight organisations. Mala holds various positions in many organisations and is a member of the Hinemoa Maori Women’s Welfare League; Deputy Chairperson of the Family Violence Death Review committee that reviews all family violence deaths in the country; Regional Member of the Child Mortality Review Committee; Advisory member to Waiariki Bachelor of Nursing School Academic Development; Member of the Alliance Leadership Team – Lakes District Health Board, PHO and Whanau Ora; Member of the Rotorua Children’s Team – Vulnerable Children’s Initiative; Trustee of Paehinahina Mourea Trust and Board member for Korowai Aroha Health Trust. Mala’s many skills encompass offering support and advice from a range of experiences gained over the years, passion for continuing to learn, and she is supported by great mentors and whanau. Mala completed an MBA in 2013 and is currently Chairperson of the NZIHM Lakes Branch. She is committed to the development of our hapu and iwi and to ensuring that good business practises are employed but also that whanau health and wealth remain the core focus of good decision making. John McManus

General Manager of the Southern Cross Hospital in Christchurch



The Christchurch Southern Cross Hospital is the largest in the nation-wide Southern Cross network having 10 Operating Theatres and 87 inpatient beds. The Hospital has some of the most technically advanced surgical systems available including robotically-assisted surgery, digital theatres and an advanced hybrid operating theatre. Patient care facilities include an advanced High Dependency Care ward. John has been at Southern Cross since 2000, previously holding the position of Regional Business Manager. Prior to that John worked at Burwood Hospital managing Canterbury DHB’s ACC Contracts and at Burnham Military Camp as Finance Manager for NZ Defence Force. Jennifer Coles

Jenni has a career in the public and private health sectors. Jenni was the Chief Operating Officer of Counties Manukau DHB and in the private sector was Director of Care Homes and Rehabilitation for Bupa NZ.

Nicola North

 

Honorary Associate Professor in Health Systems, Health Systems Section, School of Population Health, in the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences,

 

Nicola recently retired from full-time employment teaching and researching in health management and health leadership. Like many working in health management, Nicola first learned the craft on the job, as director of a large community health programme, and only later formally studied in the discipline. Her last major achievement before retirement was developing and implementing a taught Masters in Health Management, designed with the needs of active health managers and clinicians at centre-stage. Nicola’s academic career in health management of 28 years began in the College of Business at Massey University, and concluded at The University of Auckland. She taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervised dozens of Masters students and 18 doctoral students. She was an active researcher, and principal investigator of several HRC funded studies, as well as several contracted evaluations and other research. Her most recent research was in the area of health management competencies.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Paula Anne Murray

Paula is a leader who creates an exceptionally strong team ethos whilst motivating multi-disciplinary and clinical teams to succeed. She thrives on maintaining and developing organisational culture, embracing values and enhancing stakeholder reputation. Paula is currently the General Manager at Southern Cross Brightside in Epsom, Auckland where she has successfully transformed the business to profitable growth. Recruitment selection was crucial in this process, along with managing existing employees to peak performance and refining areas of low productivity. Paula has been a resident of New Zealand since 2002 and during this time has furthered her knowledge by completing several Business management courses, Masters in Nursing and gained  Fellowship of the Australasian College of Health Service Managers in 2017.
