"Health Leadership Journey"

Alan Merry is an anaesthesiologist who practises in chronic pain management at Auckland City Hospital. He is Deputy Dean, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland. He is Chair of the Board of the NZ Health Quality and Safety Commission and on the Boards of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists and Lifebox, both of which aim to improve standards of anaesthesia and surgical care in low-income areas of the world. His books, book chapters and papers in peer-reviewed journals reflect interests in human factors, patient safety, global health and simulation.


A critical analysis, followed by a discussion, of the decision in New Zealand not to publicize the results of individual surgeons, but instead to publicize the results of surgical units.

Alan will cover the statistical challenges of measuring surgical outcomes; teamwork in surgery and perioperative care; culture in the operating room.

After the presentation Alan will facilitate a discussion 

The goal is to gain a greater understanding of how best to achieve and demonstrate excellent surgical outcomes.
